St. Mary’s Church (first) is dedicated.

September 30, 1849

Architect: Arthur Gilman. Designed in the Tudor style, it is dedicated in September and located on Bowdoin Street near Topliff Street. The first Anglican church in Dorchester, its congregation held its first service in Lyceum Hall on August 23, 1847. G.W. Porter is the first minister. The building is enlarged in 1860s and destroyed by a fire on June 15, 1887. A new church (second) opens at Cushing Avenue and Stoughton Street in 1888.*
